Your operating system (OS) is the software that manages your device's hardware and applications — such as Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, or iOS. Websites detect your OS through the user agent string your browser sends with every request.
Your operating system is the foundation software that runs your device. It manages hardware resources, provides a user interface, and enables applications to run. Each OS has its own characteristics:
Windows: Most popular for desktop PCs, known for wide software compatibility
macOS: Apple's desktop OS, known for design and integration with Apple devices
Linux: Open-source, popular with developers and servers
Android: Most popular mobile OS, runs on many device brands
iOS: Apple's mobile OS, runs exclusively on iPhones and iPads
Windows 11 did not change the version token in the browser's user agent string. Both Windows 10 and Windows 11 send Windows NT 10.0, so the classic user agent alone cannot tell them apart. Any site that claims otherwise from the user agent is guessing.
Here is what this tool actually does. First it reads the user agent; if it sees Windows NT 10.0 it shows "Windows 10 or 11". Then, if your browser supports User-Agent Client Hints (Chrome, Edge, Opera and other Chromium browsers), it asks for the platformVersion hint. Windows 11 reports a platform version of 13 or higher, Windows 10 reports a lower one, and the result is updated to "Windows 11" or "Windows 10".
Firefox and Safari do not provide Client Hints. In those browsers the result stays at "Windows 10 or 11" because there is no reliable signal to go further — we would rather show an honest range than a wrong answer.
Software downloads, drivers and games often ship separate builds per platform, and support teams usually ask for your OS first. The result above gives you the name and the most precise version your browser is willing to share.
Expect version numbers to be coarse. macOS browsers report a frozen 10.15.7 regardless of the real release, and Chromium on Android reduces the device details it shares. For an exact build number, check your system settings: Settings → System → About on Windows, Apple menu → About This Mac on macOS, or the About phone / General → About screen on mobile.
Whatever version you run, the support status card above shows whether it still receives security updates from its vendor. A system that no longer gets updates is exposed below the browser, and no browser setting can fix that.
